Dental Crown Q&A

Dental Crown

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is an artificial “cap” or cover that fits over the surface of your natural tooth. Once in place, a crown covers all visible portions of the tooth, right up to the gumline.

Dental crowns offer the chance to address multiple dental issues with a safe and durable option. While dental crowns have been in use for many years, advancements in dental technology have improved both the experience of getting a crown and the appearance of the crowns themselves.

Some of the reasons you might need a dental crown include:

  • Broken teeth
  • Large chips in teeth
  • Covering a large filling that might destabilize a tooth
  • Teeth with unusual shapes or sizes
  • Completing a root canal
  • Holding a dental bridge in place

Dental crowns are also the visible portion of dental implants.

How do same day crowns work?

Smile Studio of Buford offers same-day dental crowns that can restore your smile in just one visit. The CEREC system stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic, and it’s an outstanding option for same-day crowns.

The process begins with digital imaging, which allows Dr. Workman to gather specific details about the size, shape, and positioning of each of your teeth and the underlying bone tissue. Using that data, computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), create a customized digital model of your teeth.

The CEREC milling machine then creates a 3D ceramic crown that fits perfectly over your natural tooth, which Dr. Workman prepares by removing a small amount of tooth tissue to make room for the crown. Adjustments for color and fit are made as needed.

Once your crown is cemented into place, the restoration is complete. You leave with your new smile, ready to share.

Do dental crowns need special care?

Once in place, your new crown looks and functions just like your natural teeth. Simply continue your dental hygiene routine to keep your crown clean and to support healthy gum tissue.

The same guidance for natural teeth also applies to your crown. Avoid biting down on non-food items, and don’t use your teeth to hold or pry items.

When you come in for your routine dental exams and cleanings, the Smile Studio of Buford team checks your crown along with your natural teeth and other restorations. You can expect your crown to last 10-30 years, depending on your overall dental hygiene and care.
