Dentures Q&A

Dentures

What are dentures?

Dentures are custom-crafted oral restorations used to replace some or all of your teeth. They’re made from materials like acrylic, nylon, or plastic and mimic the appearance and function of your natural teeth. In addition to improving your oral health, dentures make it easier to smile and speak confidently.

What are the different types of dentures?

At Smile Studio of Buford, the team offers several types of dentures, including:

Partial dentures

If you’re missing only a few teeth, your provider might recommend partial dentures. Partial dentures include a wire frame that supports one or several artificial teeth. The wire frame snaps into place around your existing teeth, restoring your smile to its near original condition. Partial dentures are removable, making cleaning and maintenance easy and hassle-free.

Full dentures

If you’re missing all of the teeth on your upper or lower arch, your provider might recommend full dentures. Full dentures have a solid, metallic base plate, pink plastic gums, and a full row of artificial teeth. You apply a denture glue or adhesive to the bottom to prevent them from slipping.

Full dentures are removable and easy to maintain. You take them out each night before bed and soak them in a denture solution.

What does getting dentures involve?

Getting dentures typically takes several appointments spaced over multiple weeks or months.

At your initial appointment, the team conducts an oral exam and reviews your oral health history. They then take oral X-rays to determine the health of your jaw and alveolar bone.

Afterward, your provider takes impressions of your mouth. They send your impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your partial or full dentures.

At your final appointment, your provider has you try your new dentures on. They make adjustments as necessary and provide you with a list of care instructions.
